Cherry was the site of the Cherry Mine Disaster, which killed 259 coal miners in November 1909. This disaster is the third most deadly mine disaster in U. S. history.  Visit the stone monument erected in memory of the lost miners as you enter town. Call the library 815-894-3338 to arrange a visit and view the mine scale model and display items associated with the mine.
