Historical Societies & Museums

Bureau County Genealogical Society   629 South Main St.
The genealogical society houses records of : Bureau Co. Census (1850-1930); Cemetery Records with Index; Marriage Index; Divorce Index; Funeral Home Records; Newspapers - Princeton and other small towns; City and County Histories; Family Histories; Church Records and Histories; Bureau Co. Atlases; Bureau co. history books including many town histories; Illinois Public Domain Land Records; Illinois Death Index 1916-1947; Source Books for some Illinois counties, other States, and Foreign Countries; County Farm/Home Records.   Hours: Monday - Friday 10:00-3:00. Open Saturday by appointment only.
Bureau County Historical Society  109 Park Avenue West
The museum and library are located in the historic Clark-Norris Home. Four floors are filled with outstanding collections of Bureau County history. Family information and photographs of early residents are available from the Henry W. Immke Photographic Archive.1-5 Wed. thru Mon. all year.
Group tours by appointment. Adults $1.00, Students $.25. brochure available.

Tours for groups of 15 or more. Tours include livestock and grain farming. Sponsored by the Bureau County Farm Bureau.

Bureau County Soldiers and Sailors Monument
Courthouse Square. A monument originally dedicated to Civil War Veterans of Bureau County. Today it is rededicated to all Bureau County veterans. Built in 1913 at a cost of $25,000, it is made of granite and bronze. It stands 50 feet high and is topped by the winged victory statue. Drive-by.
Historical Homes and Architecture of Princeton
Available at the Chamber of Commerce and Bureau Co. Historical Society Museum is a self-guided tour of historical homes and architectural points of interest. Visitors are invited to pick up the tour maps and drive by buildings exhibiting various styles of architecture. $.50

Matson Public Library 15 Park Avenue West.
The library contains an outstanding collection of Bureau County genealogical reference material, history books, census and cemetery records, indexed newspaper, city directories, atlases, and family histories.

Owen Lovejoy Homestead Site  East Peru Street (Route 6), 1 mile from downtown.
The 1838 Owen Lovejoy Homestead was the home of a fiery abolitionist minister and a famed station on the underground railroad. Rooms are furnished with period furniture. Visitors are invited to look into the hidden area above the stairs where runaway slaves were hidden. Also on the property is the Colton one-room schoolhouse built in 1849.

Red Covered Bridge  1 1/2 miles north of Princeton on Rt. 26. 

bridge.gif (23435 bytes) One of five remaining covered bridges in Illinois, this bridge was built in 1863 and is still open to traffic. It crosses Big Bureau Creek and was once part of the Peoria-Galena Trail. This beautiful landmark is a delight for artists, photographers and nature lovers. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. (815) 875-2616
 
Warnecke Woods Spring Wildflower Walk  2 miles northwest of Princeton near the Red Covered Bridge.
Guides will take participants into the woods for conservation study and nature enjoyment. The Bureau Co. Natural Area Guardians also sell prairie plants, both mesic and dry mesic varieties. Order plants in the winter for pick-up in May. Call for information about the walk.

Alexander Park and Swimming Pool  Anderson Street.
Park has tennis courts, picnic shelter and playground equipment. The pool is open to the public. Charge for pool only. Summer: 1-5 and 6-8.

City-County Park  On Route 26, North of Princeton.
Park is located on two different levels off of Route 26. Provides picnic areas, outdoor grills, shelters, ball diamonds, playground equipment and nature trails.
